It’s exciting to know one of Shreveport’s favorite restauranteurs is going to breathe new life into this spectacular location. Dining on the lake watching the sun set over the lake is a great way to wrap up a long day. The moment you walked in to the restaurant, you were greeted by a giant mounted alligator on the front wall. Smith’s was one of the area’s most popular restaurants for decades. One of Shreveport’s most iconic restaurant sites is getting a new eatery.

The Food That Steals the Show

Another Broken Egg Cafe is prepared to feel like a casual getaway served with a great side of family, friends, and friendly service.

As a qualified barista who’s tested my fair share of coffee machines, I felt I was up to the task to see if this gadget is worth the hype, so spent a good few weeks getting to know the machine’s quirks and wide range of functions. Could one machine really handle three very different types of coffee and do them all well? When Ninja announced that it was launching the Luxe Café Pro Series – a coffee machine that brews espresso, filter coffee and cold brew – I’ll admit I was impressed but curious.

Brother’s Seafood is a locally owned and operated casual seafood restaurant that offers lunch and dinner. However, a handful of diners reported longer than expected wait times, with one saying, “the wait was an HOUR plus.” Overall, the lakeside setting and lively atmosphere seem to create a memorable experience for most guests. While Orlandeaux’s is popular year-round, reviewers suggest the best times to visit may be on weekdays or earlier in the evening. As one enthusiastic reviewer put it, “The food was fantastic and the portion was huge.” Another noted the “great depth of flavor” in the gumbo, which was “full of shrimp, chicken & sausage.” While most reviews rave about the food, a handful of diners had less positive experiences. As one reviewer put it, the restaurant has “a family feel environment” that makes guests feel right at home. We had the gumbo, stuffed shrimped, shrimp creole, corn bread and peach cobbler and the best sweet tea! From classic breakfast options like hotcakes and omelets to lunch and dinner favorites such as seafood platters and smothered steak hamburgers, their menu has something for everyone.

Chef Chapman began working at Freeman and Harris when he was 13 years old by washing pots, sweeping floors, and doing whatever other chores his family instructed him to do. He also gained insightful training at the historic Smith’s Cross Lake Inn Restaurant. “Brother” Chapman later introduced his son, Orlando Chapman, to the art of cooking. He was the son of Arthur “Scrap” Chapman, who was an original founding partner with the late Pete Harris of the legendary restaurant Freeman & Harris Cafe’. Chapman is committed to staying at the heart of the Black community, and assuring Orlandeaux’s remains a destination where visitors can experience Shreveport-Bossier’s rich culture and history. Founded in 1921, the café provided a welcoming space for people to gather and enjoy traditional Southern dishes during a time when the South was still segregated. He is an incredible ambassador for Shreveport-Bossier, and visitors leave his café with more than a great meal – they leave with a piece of our story.”

As one reviewer noted, “The wait time is on average on 1-2 hours on a Saturday afternoon/dinner time.” Others recommended arriving early or calling ahead to put your name on the list. Several diners warned that long wait times are common at Orlandeaux’s, especially on weekends. ” No matter who you are, the welcoming atmosphere and mouthwatering food make Orlandeaux’s a must-try. Well maybe that’s everyday I wouldn’t know but we arrived at 1pm on a Saturday and the place was packed.” Another warned, “Don’t venture there on weekend unless you got time to spare. As one diner noted, “I guess today was the family reunion day here. Shared, “The atmosphere is always welcoming and customer service is always on point.” Many noted the staff’s willingness to make recommendations and ensure a great experience.

Chef Chapman hails from a family of distinguished restaurateurs, starting at Freeman and Harris Cafe in Shreveport with grandfather and father, William “Brother” Chapman. Over the years, through observation, tenacity, self-instruction, and finally finding many of the handwritten notes on recipes his father, Chef Chapman came into his own right as a celebrated chef. “Brother” Chapman began his career working at his father’s side at Freeman & Harris Cafe’ in the early 1950’s, when he was a high school junior. The resturant was widely recognized for its delicious soul food, most famous for its fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, stuffed shrimp, and peach pie. His father, “Scrap,” along with Pete Harris and the late Wilmer “Tody” Wallette, served as his culinary mentors. They taught “Brother” Chapman the majority of his skills of the trade. Stimming from 1921, but undergoing a few name changes, (Freeman & Harris Café, Pete Harris Café, Brother’s Seafood), Orlandeaux’s Café is recognized as the continued legacy of the Oldest Continuously Operating African-American Family Owned restaurant in the United States!

If you want a machine that masters one specific function, you might be better off buying a dedicated model (filter coffee purists, for instance, will find plenty of options in our best filter coffee machines guide). With that in mind, it’s worth switching to a lighter roast if you want a more traditional filter coffee, or compromising with a medium roast if you don’t want to keep switching your coffee beans. This meant my filter coffee wasn’t as fruity and light as I usually like it, as the roast level was too dark. Filter coffee was delicious too, but because I was switching between making espresso-based coffee and filter coffee during my testing, I didn’t change which beans I was using. I enjoyed every drink I made with this machine, but where I think it shines is espresso-based coffee. So, does the Ninja Luxe Café Pro actually make a decent cup of coffee, or is it just a jack of all trades, master of none?

I can’t say enough about how pleased I was orlandeaux’s café reviews with my visit here!! Portions were more than generous, and the waterfront view added to the experience. The greens were perfectly seasoned, but the stuffed shrimp stole the show.
